At the MET Sacramento we believe that education is everyone's business. Learning opportunities are everywhere, not just inside classrooms. Research tells us that we learn best when we are personally motivated. When we have a passion for what we are doing, knowledge unfolds and evolves naturally.

A mentor gives each student the opportunity to learn from an adult with a similar interest. The focus on real work in professionals settings gives the students' learning context, depth, and authenticity. Through genuine relationships, mentors teach a work ethic, and model what it means to be an adult member of our community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Insurance?

The Sacramento City Unified School District provides a self-insurance workers' compensation program. This coverage extends to students involved in all work experience training programs. Copies of the insurances policy are available from the school and district.

Transportation?

It is the responsibility of the intern to get to and from the work place. If in the course of the work it is necessary for the intern to travel with the mentor, the parent/guardian will sign a permission letter.

Professionalism?

At school, the staff works with students to develop their personal qualities, communication, reasoning, and critical thinking skills. Students gain an understanding of appropriate dress, professional writing, participation in meetings, project development, creation of timelines and meeting deadlines.

Assessment?

Students present their work in a 45-minute public exhibition at the end of each quarter. The student's family members, mentor, advisor, peers and other community members come together to reflect on and evaluate the student's learning. The professional presentation includes written documentation of their process and products as well as visuals and an agenda.

Interested in mentoring or hosting a shadow day?

First steps include discussing what sort of shadowing/internship opportunities might be available at your site. We then work to find a student whose interests and passions would make the best match. Students submit a cover letter and resume. Before we ask for any commitment from a prospective mentor, we arrange a shadow day; this is an opportunity for an informal interview and discussion to make sure that the prospective intern, mentor, and advisor all agree that the student will be able to contribute to the site while engaging in authentic learning experiences.
