THE MET: Internship Central / STEP 1

go to step 2

STEP 1: What is an internship?

Internships are a critically important part of your high school experience at The Met. Internships (LTI) are what enable you to pursue your passion! It is your chance to explore the things that you are interested in and earn high school credit along the way. But what actually is an internship anyway?

An internship is:

  • Unpaid "work" that you do at an business, public or professional organization.
  • It is usually two days a week and about 12 hours a week.
  • It is a chance for you to gain "real world experience" in a profession that you are interested in or curious about.
  • Ideally, you are treated as an employee. You work to earn the trust and respect of your mentor so that you can be given REAL RESPONSIBILITY.
  • It is ultimately a chance for you to earn high school credit, by successfully completing PROJECTS at your internship.
    • These projects should be related to things that INTEREST YOU.
    • These projects should be REAL. That means that it should be something that the organization really needs!
    • These projects should require that you have to learn things in order for them to be completed.

It works like this:

  1. You figure out what you want to be doing 2 days a week FOR SCHOOL! (Pretty cool!)
  2. You get a RESUME AND COVER LETTER TEMPLATE together to give to potential internship sites.
  3. SEARCH FOR SITES that are currently in our system OR search for places we have not tried before.
  4. You get permission to PURSUE THE SITE with your advisor and the internship coordinator.
  5. Once you HAVE PERMISSION (see #4), send our that cover letter and resume.
  6. You or your advisor CALL THE SITE and make the pitch for a SHADOW DAY.
  7. REPEAT STEPS 1-6 MANY, MANY TIMES UNTIL YOU GET A SHADOW DAY!!!!
  8. Land a shadow day - WOOHOOOO!
  9. Gather info about our school and prepare questions to ask at your shadow day.
  10. Show up at shadow day. Be awesome!
  11. Mention to mentor our internship program.
  12. After shadow day, WRITE THANK YOU LETTER.
  13. You or your advisor call mentor to see if they will have you as an UNPAID INTERN.
  14. SCORE AN INTERNSHIP. (Your advisor will set it up.)

DID YOU KNOW?
  • You can search for potential internships using our state of the art Database Map

Please remember that it is your responsibility to contact your mentor if and when you will be absent. It is not enough to call your advisor! All it takes is one phone call to let them know you will be absent.

Please not that when a site reads "AT LIMIT" it is because there are only 2-3 students allowed to pursue/intern at a school. Please do not contact any teachers without being cleared by me first.
